Google: Attempts to rank results by relevance, and does a pretty good job!
Alta Vista: searches on a very large database and allows very complex searching; probably the best search engine for general purposes, but flawed by having too many "hits".
HotBot: often retrieves more relevant sites than AltaVista, but often fails to support complex searches adequately.
Northern Light: A good search engine for academic purposes. Searches on a smaller database than many other engines, but sorts results into subject groupings so results are often more relevant than with other search engines.
