Driving less, driving for greater fuel efficiency
- Walk, ride a bike, rollerblade, skateboard -- you'll become more fit and help the planet too!
- Pick up a Springfield bike system map from the student center information desk.
- The bike trails of Springfield, Clark County, and the surrounding area can also be accessed at National Trails: Clark County
- Yellow Springs is c. 10 miles away, and the trip takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. To take this path, travel South on Fountain Ave. and take a right once you pass the Heritage Center. Follow the signs and take the senic route to one of Ohio's most eco-friendly towns
- Another nice bike trail that is easily accessible from campus takes you to Buck Creek and the C.J. Brown Reservoir. The ride is about 20-30 minutes. To get to this trail, head south on Fountain Ave. Take a left onto Warder St. at the stoplight, and the bike trail will start at the next intersection.
- In Springfield, you can take the bus (SCAT)
- Ride your bike to the grocery store! It's an easy trip to Kroger if you ride through Snyder Park. If you are at Ferncliff Dorm, take the street along commencement Hollow, toward the playground. Cross the street, head north on Plum, and ride through Snyder Park. Take a right onto Bechtle st. at the first bridge you come to. Kroger is up the hill on the left. The ride is only about 10 minutes, and I am convinced it takes me less time to grocery shop on a bike than in a car. Plus you don't buy excess food because you have to haul everything with your own weight!
- Carpool, call a friend and combine your trips.
- Keep your tires inflated to their proper levels.
- Avoid braking unnecessarily, coast, don't speed. If you'd like to see someone taking this to the extreme, check out this hypermiler

Offset your greenhouse gas emissions
One way to counterbalance the environmental impact of your transportation is to purchase carbon offsets. These offsets go toward building wind farms or other sources of clean, renewable energy. One place you can do this is through Native Energy. Check out their travel calculator to see how much carbon you emit by car, plane, train, or bus. An excellent guide to carbon offset choices and options can be found at Co-op America.
